The Argument Against Evil: Is the Christian Belief Hurting People?

Unfortunately, one of the arguments that comes up often at this time in the debate is that my beliefs hurt people a lot. To quote one person who I talked to,

“... you're shutting these people down and making them feel worthless. These are not things people can change, and I urge you to become more accepting before your actions actually start hurting people, or worse, hurting you.”

This is a more difficult topic in these sorts of debates. Whether what someone believes is wrong or not, it can hurt them to have those beliefs refuted.

And in reality, whether someone hurts because their beliefs are wrong really isn’t your problem. All you can do is convey your beliefs in as much of a non-harsh way as you can.

The simple truth is is that anyone can just say that you saying X makes them want to commit suicide, but that doesn’t mean that that person should say that. I can say that “people saying the word banana makes me want to kill myself”, but that’s not a problem with the person saying the word banana, but rather it’s a problem with the person who hates hearing the word. This person is just going to have to put up with it whether they like it or not, and they need to learn to just deal with it.

And the simple fact is that if you believe something you should be ready to defend that. If you believe something and don’t want to/can’t defend it, then you really just shouldn’t believe that. You have to have logic to back up your beliefs, otherwise people will stomp on you like you’re an ant. With this ability comes the need to be able to put up with people who refute your beliefs.

In the end, this is their problem, not yours. You can’t do anything to change that.
